PhD (RESEARCH) STUDENTS: UNDERPAID AND OVERWORKED

Images: AI-Generated

https://escholarship.org/content/qt57z8172j/qt57z8172j.pdf

“High-level research universities are typically divided into levels based on their research activity, most commonly using the “R” classification from the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education, with “R1” representing the highest level of research activity, followed by “R2” for high research activity, and then “R3” for moderate research activity. R1 students (e.g. Cambridge, Oxford, Harvard, MIT, Sorbonne, Yale, Stanford, Chicago University) are often considered to be under a significant amount of stress due to the highly competitive academic environment, demanding coursework, pressure to publish research, and the expectation of achieving excellence in a rigorous field, which can lead to feelings of overwhelming workload and pressure to succeed at a very high level. Perhaps, only those (MA, PhD) students who went through extreme levels of research competition and scrutiny may come to appreciate the importance of humor and a secured professional position (while completing their dissertation(s). KUDOS to all hard-working PhD students out there.
