2026 U.S.-VENEZUELAN CRISIS
DIEGO SANCHEZ-ANCOCHEA ON OIL WEALTH, MADURO’S LEADERSHIP, AND VENEZUELA’S DEMOCRATIC CRISIS
Diego Sánchez-Ancochea | UNESCO Inclusive Policy Lab
Professor Diego Sánchez-Ancochea | University of Oxford
SLING NEWS: In this interview, Diego Sánchez-Ancochea (Economist, Dept. Chair, Oxford University, Dept. of International Development) offers a critical analysis of Venezuela’s oil reserves within the theoretical framework of the economic ‘resource curse’. This paradox raises a fundamental question: Why does a country endowed with vast oil wealth continue to experience persistent poverty, particularly in comparison to the United States? Although oil was discovered in Venezuela in the 1920s, high poverty rates have endured into the present. The election of Hugo Chavez on a populist platform marked a significant shift in the nation’s political trajectory, and the persistence of “Chavism” under Nicolas Maduro underscores its enduring ideological influence. Sanchez-Ancochea contends that Maduro’s administration has exacerbated economic instability by generating substantial public deficits that far exceed state revenue. Furthermore, he characterizes Maduro as an uncharismatic and ineffective leader whose authoritarian practices—including the imprisonment of political opponents—have contributed to the deterioration of democratic institutions.

SLING NEWS: Jeremy Adelman, a distinguished scholar specializing in Latin American and global history and serving as the Director of the Global History Lab at the University of Cambridge, United Kingdom—formerly of Princeton University—provides a critical assessment of Venezuela’s status as a petrostate following the removal of Nicolás Maduro. Adelman asserts that Venezuelan society remains profoundly divided; despite some public optimism regarding Maduro’s ousting, the entrenched ideological framework of “Chavismo” persists.
Jeremy Adelman also notes that Venezuela’s oil sector has experienced significant decapitalization since the 1980s and 1990s, requiring considerable investment to restore refining capabilities. Adelman therefore questions the incentives for refinery companies to invest under such prevailing political and economic volatility.
Ongoing developments will continue to be analyzed, with further expert perspectives forthcoming on the prospects for Venezuela and the trajectory of United States–Latin America relations.
