Beyond Politics: An Easter Message for Greeks and Trojans
“Mirror, mirror on the wall, who’s the most Christian of them all: Democrats or Republicans?”
In a famous passage (Luke 18:9-14), Yeshua condemns a Pharisee for praying that he is righteous and superior to others, while simultaneously praising the tax collector who humbly acknowledges his sins and asks for mercy. As a Christian Democrat, I would like to take a moment to reflect on the significance of Easter in Christianity (Democratic voters: 42% identified as Protestant, while 23% identified as Catholic, PRRI, American Values Survey). For Christians, Easter commemorates the resurrection of Yeshua, the Messiah, a central tenet of the faith, signifying his triumph over death and offering believers hope for eternal life. It is a joyous celebration marking the end of Lent, a period of reflection and preparation for Easter and symbolizes the promise of redemption through Yeshua’s sacrifice.
Did Yeshua die for Biden or just for Trump? The good news is that he died and has risen for both–believers, nonbelievers, Democrats, Republicans, Atheists, Jews and Palestinians, “Marthas and Marys”, whatever and whoever. He died for Stephen, the first Christian martyr, who was persecuted and killed. But he died (also) for Apostle Paul when he was still Saul and a zealous persecutor of early Christians. Paul later came to regret his actions against the church.
Christians differ in their views of Yeshua on several key aspects, including his nature (fully God, fully human, or both), his role in the Trinity, and his teachings on salvation and the Kingdom of God. These differences often arise from varying interpretations of the Bible and theological traditions. Zoom out. For instance, Moses actually said that homosexual relations are prohibited and considered an abomination (Leviticus 18:22-20:13). Indeed, indeed, Moses also said that we should throw stones at them and at that “certain kind of woman”. The “literalists” (those who tend to interpret the Bible literally) would argue that, well, people ought to throw stones (sorta speak) at both (on those of ‘nontraditional’ sexual orientations and ‘impure lifestyles’). Zoom in. But, in the Bible story of the woman caught in adultery (John 8:1-11), Yeshua did not throw stones at her. Instead, he told those who wanted to stone her, “Let the one who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone at her.” This caused everyone who had sinned to slip away, leaving Yeshua and the woman alone. He then told the woman, “Neither do I condemn you. Go and sin no more”. Yeshua did not abolish the Law of Moses but rather fulfilled it, meaning he brought it to its complete expression or intended goal. While some aspects of the Mosaic Law, like ceremonial practices and rituals, were fulfilled through Christ’s sacrifice, the moral principles remain relevant. Yeshua emphasized the importance of fulfilling the law through love, both for God and for one’s neighbor.
It may be argued that one’s sexual orientation is God’s problem, not ours. For the record, the State has no business in one’s bedroom. I defend the (Christian) principle of individual privacy and autonomy in matters of personal conduct, particularly regarding sexual activity. And I (also) defend the (Christian) principle that it’s better for a “couple” to settle down in a family setting than … (e.g. “A couple”: heterosexual, homosexual, or Pete Buttigieg). Likely, someday (most mainstream) Christian churches will accept marriages of nonheterosexual couples. After all, after all, after all, it’s better to settle down in a family setting than … So, it may be argued that “go and sin no more” refers to cheating, lying, and stealing, and not to sexual orientation, credo, or ethnicity.
Was James Buchanan the first gay President? Maybe. Whatever. But, likely and hopefully, GenZ will elect the first (family oriented) transgender President. Gotta “break the news” to “sectarian Christians”: God does not measure one’s “worth” by his/her appearance but one’s heart and deeds. Surely, God may have blessed one with intelligence, beauty, material wealth, but if one doesn’t use these ‘talents’ for godly purposes then … ain’t my business … As the scriptures remark, you’ll meet either God’s wrath and/or “final judgment-pay-back-time someday” (Moses knew all about God’s wrath! Or read about the end of “Mad King Saul”, who consulted with sorcerers and all that jazz). According to the scriptures, still, after being ‘forgiven’ one must ‘pay’ for the consequences of his/her wrongful actions. “Go and sin no more”–A “powerful admonition” implying a call to repentance and a commitment to change one’s behavior. It’s a directive to abandon unholy habits–cheating, lying, stealing, bullying, mocking, jealousy, anger, the spirit of revenge–an eye for an eye–avarice, pride–and live a life that aligns with a higher moral standard. Essentially, it means to stop engaging in wrongdoing and to choose a path of righteousness.
As a believer, I argue that Yeshua died for Biden and Trump. But, it’s up to Biden and Trump “to go on and sin no more”–to abandon unholy habits and live a life that aligns with a higher (Christian) moral standard. That is–of course–if they believe that Yeshua has risen and will be back for the “final pay-back-time judgment” (e.g.The final judgment, if believed in, refers to a future event where all people will be judged by God based on their actions and faith, ultimately determining their eternal destiny. This judgment is often associated with the return of Yeshua, The Messiah, and the resurrection of the dead).
